Hull KR - the heirs apparent to the Wigan Warriors Betfred Super League title?

Writer's picture: Super League RawSuper League Raw

With each unfolding season, Hull KR flourishes, blossoming both on the field and beyond. Boasting a spirited community of over 9,500 members for 2025, the atmosphere before, during, and after the games pulsates with vibrancy. Coupled with a team that possesses the prowess to rival the finest and deliver a mesmerising spectacle of Rugby League, it is undoubtedly a question of when, not if, the Robins will once more savour the sweet nectar of victory.

In 2023, the Robins pushed the Leigh Leopards to the edge of glory at Wembley, almost capturing that coveted trophy for the first time since 1980! Last season, they turned up the sparkle and strutted their stuff all the way to their first Grand Final at Old Trafford, just shy of snagging the league leaders shield. While silverware may still be playing hard to get, KR has transformed into a jaw-droppingly entertaining squad that's ready to take the crown in 2025!

Hull KR Squad - Betfred Super League 2025
Willie Peters has a squad many a coach would sell their mothers for!

Hold onto your hats, because the 2024 strike force is ready to rumble! With Ryan Hall waving goodbye, Tom Davies is stepping up to fill those big shoes. Now, younger fans might not recall the glory days of 2008 when this 28-year-old scored at the Grand Final against Warrington, helping the Warriors to a 12-4 victory. Since then, trophy-hunting has been a bit like finding a chameleon in a bag of skittles, but tries? Oh, he's been racking them up! With 84 tries in 159 Betfred Super League appearances over 8 seasons, Davies is primed and ready to add even more flair to the Robins' game this season!

JWH IS HERE!

There have been some heavy-hitting prop forwards making their grand entrance into Super League from the NRL, but has any name ever caused a bigger buzz in the modern era? This guy practically brought passport control to a standstill, flashing so much bling from his championship rings that it could blind you! We're talking three shiny NRL Grand Final rings from 2013, 2018, and 2019—now that’s some serious golden baggage! As the highlight reel illustrates, many players will undoubtedly experience fear—profound fear.

Peters isn’t just rolling in the experience department with JWH; he’s also got a star-studded crew featuring Mikey McIlorum, Lee Kershaw, and Danny Richardson! But wait, there’s more! He’s tossed in some dazzling young talent like Josh Rourke from London, Eribe Doro from Bradford, Leon Ruan from Leeds, and Noah Booth from Wakefield. And let’s not forget the cherry on top: the sensational Bill Leyland, the 2023 young championship player of the year! Talk about one eye on the future! Super League Raw believe Bill could be one of the young stars of the season.

If the Robins had a kryptonite last season, it was definitely their goal-kicking! The kicking tee was tossed around like a hot potato, with even James Batchelor getting in on the action. The result? A woeful tally of 93 successful conversions out of 145 attempts, giving them a shaky 64.1% success rate—the lowest in the Super League! Ouch!

Enter Rhyse Martin, the Super League Raw Leeds Rhinos Player of the Year. Rhyse is renowned for his versatility, excelling in both back row and centre positions. He boasts an impressive try-scoring record of 40 in 132 appearances for the Rhinos, coupled with a conversion percentage of 84.4% last year. Simply put, had Rhyse Martin been in the Robins' line-up for goal-kicking duties, they would likely have been shield winners. This strong performance is likely why many commentators consider them favourites to lift the shield this year.

Is Rhyse the missing piece?

Robins fans are eagerly anticipating a potentially historic season at Craven Park, proudly displaying their vibrant red attire while honing their vocal skills to create a lively atmosphere. With the addition of new recruits and the retention of talents such as Minchella, Hiku, Tanginoa, Whitbread, and Evalds, the team appears well-positioned to challenge the reigning champions. Furthermore, the presence of the current Super League Man of Steel, Mikey Lewis, adds to the excitement. His remarkable talent has captured our attention, and we are hopeful that he can continue his impressive performance from last year. Let us reflect on his extraordinary 2024 campaign.

Willie Peters knows his side was not far off last year and was full of praise and respect at Coop live for the quadruple champions Wigan, but he was clear on what his side will bring this year:

"We're in the entertainment business that's something I learned a long time ago when I was playing but obviously now that I'm coaching you know people want to come and see an entertaining team. So we don't want to be a team that just has five carries and a kick we want to ask questions of the opposition, we want to play a certain style that people want to come and we believe we're doing that" Willie Peters

During 'Super League Raw Weekly' the panel assessed the Robins squad ahead of the new season, watch their debate here:

In conclusion, the rise of Hull KR has significantly benefited the Super League in recent years, with even greater potential on the horizon. Currently, they stand as the premier team in the City of Kingston upon Hull—a status that, for many years, would have been deemed sufficient. However, the Robins are now ambitiously pursuing further enhancements both on and off the field. Who would wager against them being the fifth name to be inscribed on the Super League Trophy? Certainly not us. #UptheRobins

Great round up Dave.

I almost feel it has over egged the pudding though. I hope you and the pundits are right but for me HKR need an actual 6. Mikey is a 7 and an exciting one at that but while May is quality, we just need someone with a kicking game.

Possibly deflated from a sketchy Rd 1 performance. But we will need to be 100% better than that to go win anything.
